Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do to protect my expensive flatscreen TV, computer and other electronics?
The best way to protect your valuable electronics is to install a whole-home surge protector. CMW Electric installs these in your main electrical panel. We recommend also using surge-protected power strips for all electronics. An investment in a whole-home surge protector can save a home owner thousands of dollars.
My dimmer switch gets very hot. Could this be a fire hazard?
Lighting dimmers are rated to handle a certain amount of wattage. If a dimmer is operating very close to its full capacity, it may heat up. CMW Electric may be able to install dimmers that are rated for higher wattage.
A recessed light in my home turns itself off periodically. Is this a problem?
Recessed lights are designed to turn themselves off if they get too hot. If a light reaches thermal overload, it will shut itself off until it cools, then it will turn back on. The light fixture should have a sticker inside it displaying the recommended bulb wattage. Make sure the bulb wattage is not higher than it’s rated for. If that doesn’t solve the issue, there may be a problem with the way the light is installed.
My home still has 2-prong electrical outlets. Is this a problem?
Most modern electronics and appliances come with a 3-prong plug. The flat blades deliver electricity while the 3rd prong is for ground. We recommend that you have your home properly grounded with 3-prong outlets throughout.
Does CMW Electric support green initiatives?
Yes! Our electricians can advise you on energy saving tips for appliances and other equipment for your home. CMW Electric will do everything we can to help you conserve electricity.

Our truck is stocked with thousands of electrical parts. The CMW Warehouse on Wheels allows us to be more efficient as we never have to go to the warehouse for a part. We bring the warehouse right to your door. This saves you money!
My house still has round fuses. Is this safe?
Most fuse box-based electrical systems are not designed to handle the electrical demands of the modern home. In addition, many insurance companies require that homes with fuse boxes upgrade to modern circuit breakers.
What area does CMW Electric Service?
We service the city of Lubbock and a radius of approx. 20 miles.
What is a GFCI?
GFCI Stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. This type of outlet is specially designed for use in wet locations to protect you and your family from shock. Electrical code requires that GCFIs be installed in all bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms.
Who will CMW Electrical Services send to my home?
CMW Electric sends only licensed electricians on every service call. Each of our electricians is up to date with current code standards and can advise you about all aspects of your electrical system.
The power to one of my rooms is out. What do I do?
Check your breaker box to see if one of the circuits has tripped. If one has, turn it back on. If this does not solve the problem, call an electrician immediately.
How long will my electricity be out if I need to have my panel replaced?
CMW Electric is extremely efficient. It usually takes only 3-6 hours to upgrade a panel.
What are your business hours?
CMW Electric usually works from 8am - 5pm, Monday - Friday.
How can I lower my electrical bill?
One of the easiest ways to lower your monthly electric bill is to replace all of your incandescent lightbulbs with longer lasting fluorescents. Installing ceiling fans can also help dramatically with cooling costs. Installing an attic fan can help reduce A/C costs during the summer months.
Does electrical work require a building permit?
Most general household electrical service does not require a permit. Larger projects such as room additions may require a permit and/or an inspection.
Is electrical wiring and work dangerous?
Yes. CMW Electric recommends that anyone who is inexperienced with electrical wiring or installation hire a professional electrician. All work on your electrical system should be done by a licensed and insured electrician… like those at CMW Electric.
Why do you schedule a 2-hour window for my appointment?
At CMW Electric, we're mindful of your time. We won't keep you hanging all day long waiting for us. Sometimes an appointment takes a little longer than expected or traffic or weather may be bad, so we schedule a 2-hour window. We guarantee we'll be there within the 2-hour timeframe or you don't pay for your initial service call! And, as an added courtesy, we'll call you half an hour to fifteen minutes before we arrive to let you know we're on our way.
